The education provided

·                    Structures the children's play to make the most effective use of it.

·                    Provides for their personal and social development – meeting new adults and feeling comfortable with them, and learning to play with other three year olds and not just alongside them.

·                    Provides for physical development, through outdoor play on bikes, etc. and with finer control tasks like drawing and using scissors.

·                    Encourages intellectual development

·                    Develops pre-reading, pre-writing, and pre-number skills.

·                    Develops an interest in and understanding of the world the children live in.

·                    Develops children’s imagination and the ability to express themselves creatively.

The curriculum provides a sound basis for the National Curriculum. The education they receive in nursery prepares the children for their progress through First School and beyond.

ADMISSION FORM

The child’s parent/guardian will be asked to complete an admission form, which gives the nursery staff relevant information concerning the child. Please ensure that this form is completed and returned before the child begins nursery. If possible bring the form to our ‘open day’.

ATTENDANCE

This should be as regular as possible for five sessions a week. However, since we wish to avoid the spread of infection any child who is unwell should not be brought into school. Parents will be requested to collect any child who becomes ill during a session. When a child is absent, please inform the school of the reason as soon as possible.

SAFETY

We work very hard to ensure your child’s safety but we do need your help as well. Please close the nursery door securely each time you pass through it.

EDUCATION

Our nursery provides nursery education in a stimulating and colourful environment for three and four year old children. Great emphasis is placed on children’s happiness, security and confidence, and on sharing their progress and development with you.

LINKS WITH SCHOOL

Children are included in the main school's social activities when appropriate, and parents are welcome to become part of Coquet Park's Parent Teacher and Friends Association. Children use the sports hall and preview class assemblies. Towards the end of the school year they visit the computer classroom, dining hall and art room.  Visits by reception class children and staff are done throughout the year. This helps to make the children’s move up as smooth as possible.

REGISTERING FOR A NURSERY PLACE

There are twenty-six places for children in each session and names should be entered on the waiting list as soon as possible. To register for a nursery place please contact the school (in person or by telephone) with your child’s details.

SPECIAL NEEDS

The Nursery Staff identify children who experience learning difficulties, or speech and language difficulties. Parents are immediately informed and with parental permission children may be referred to the appropriate specialist who may visit the Nursery, assess the nature and extent of the problem, and suggest programmes of activities to improve performance.

   NOTICE BOARD

There is a special Notice Board near the main entrance door for parents. You will find from time to time information about events in the nursery unit, the school or the community. Requests are made for "junk" or scrap items, which we may need for some class activities. Letters are also placed in the children’s drawer.

Please read this notice board regularly.

ADMISSION TO THE RECEPTION CLASS

Children attending the nursery may continue their education in the school, but a place in the nursery does not guarantee a place in the school's reception class. Parents must register their children at the appropriate time and the Education Authority will allocate places according to its agreed policy. During your child’s time in nursery you will be informed when you need to apply for a Reception place.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

During all the activities your child takes part in, the Nursery teacher or Nursery Nurse will observe and record your child's progress, help with any difficulties, and build on successes. These records are shared with you regularly on an informal basis, and formally twice a year. We feel strongly that parents and teachers are partners in their children's education.

MILK PROVISION

Each child in nursery is provided with 1/3rd pint of milk per session. Children who do not drink milk will be able to have water. Children may bring small cakes or biscuits to celebrate their birthday with their nursery friends, however, no sweets are allowed. Daily fruit is supplied through a lottery grant.

CLOTHING

The children take part in many exciting activities in nursery, some of which can be very messy! Aprons are available for messy activities, but please don’t send your child to nursery in their best clothes. We have included an order for the nursery uniform, although this is not compulsory we would recommend at least one red sweatshirt. Children's clothes should be simple, easily washable and should allow free movement. In summer a jacket or cardigan should always be provided for outdoor play.

ADMISSION

Children will enter nursery on a given date in accordance with our policy of staggering admissions. This policy ensures that children and parents have an opportunity to get to know the nursery staff during the first important weeks.
